Finding The Light

I close my eyes and dream.

I dream of a world that doesn't fight,

A world where people don’t look at you

and expect you to be someone you’re not.

I think of a place where the world is not crooked...

And then I open my eyes,

and nothing has changed.

People are still fighting,

There are still expectations to live up to,

And the world is still crooked,

But there is beauty in its crooked ways.

I look around me and see a world

That’s falling apart

But I also look around and see a world

That’s modestly pulling itself back together

Piece by piece,

Step by small step.

I cry,

I hurt,

But I also feel.

Because of the pain,

I know what it’s like to love,

to laugh,

to have joy,

And that’s when I realize,

The world is a beautiful place,

It’s just hard to see sometimes.

That’s when I see my dream,

With eyes wide open.

It’s all around me

And every day I wake up and  think,

‘Today is a day to smile,’

Because I know,

Through all the dark that surrounds me,

I can always chip at its edges,

And find the light.
