Finding Me

I was determined Nothing would stand in my way I would find her – I would rescue her She was lost in the storm I stood there in the aftermath Hoping for sign Although my heart was true I knew not where to start Nobody else but I had seen her disappear So I would search alone Slowly I started overturning rocks – boulders that had my heart had built The harder I searched – the more frantic I became Where was she…the girl I had locked away safely in the fortress that hearts have After turning over every rock I had and finding the same I screamed in frustration – my plan had failed. I would never return to safety Resigning myself to my fate, I sighed and let her go Suddenly, around the next corner, I saw myself My smile quickly faded as I realized that could not be the girl I searched for. Hers was a confidence too obvious, a smile too wide, a strength too great I turned away – shaking my head at my foolishness. Then I heard a hundred little voices – from those I loved and those I trusted No that’s you – they said – I laughed at their joke – they must be joking I turned back and looked in the mirror again – That’s when I saw it – the tiny little scars the storm had left That was the only clue that this was the girl I had left behind Her body – once plagued by the disease fate gave her Now looked strong and fit – as she ran towards me Instead of anger behind her eyes – I saw acceptance and maturity Shame had made me hang my head – now I saw in her eyes a challenge The storm hadn’t made her stone – it had made her tough I felt the tears of disbelief start as she stopped directly in front of me Reaching out with shaking fingers, I touched her She smiled and grabbed my hand We looked to the sky… As we gazed upwards I felt her leave my grip Panic filled me until I heard a voice inside my heart say “fear not I am here” A calm came over me as her strength filled me And I realized I had missed her true strengths – they weren’t physical Physical strength was merely a sign of the iron I now possessed within my soul A prayer of thanks to God escaped my lips His guidance and love had guided my steps to the strength I never knew I had My gaze left the sky – The threat of storms plagued me no more
