Finding Wings

It begins to consume me

Every breath I exhale

The shadowy grip closes around my neck

Suffocating the light from my body

He prevents me from telling the truth

Stretching the rope holding her and I together

Almost to the point it will break

But his plan will fail if he is the one to snap it

Knowing nothing will improve

Causes boiling salt to roll down my cheeks

Black marks are left in its place

Scars of each time he wronged me

They can be hidden with a rag

But never removed

The silent cry for help is muffled with every argument

I'm helping you

Say what I want

Don't think for yourself

You're only a kid

You rely on me

You NEED me

The anger that lusts inside my soul is suppressed

Suppressed with the depression of reality

The grip of the hand tightens

The scream I silently cry won’t reach her

How doesn’t she see?

Why doesn’t she ask?

She suggests that I leave

Putting her in the middle is a problem

I am the problem

I am trapped inside a castle where a king sits above me

Slaves cannot speak

They must leave the home they know

At least in captivity there is certainty

But they will be free if they go

I choose freedom

Embarking alone

Snapping the rope

I begin to fall

Terrified, approaching a hole

I am released into the sky

And given a sudden rush of breath

I forgot what it felt like to breathe

I forgot how bright the sky was

I spread my arms

And notice my wings

It all comes back to me

I had forgotten she trained me to fly when I was younger

She is watching me, smiling

She knew he would clip my wings when he found them

She pushed me away before he saw

I have holes in my wings

Debt, homelessness, jobless

But they work regardless

Carrying me to the light ahead

Forced to leave all that I knew

Forced to leave my biggest supporter

Not enough strength to turn back

But maybe one day she will remember she has wings too

And then she can see

The five internships

The two majors

The three president positions

The career ahead

And I will be able to tell her thank you

I just pray he never notices her wings
