Fire-Bright
Grappling with an affection that burns fire-bright,
Seeking passage into your heart, cast away;
My soul, empty without you, you benight.
Addressing you, your response is forthright:
Your love for me cannot exist, and I remain today
Grappling with an affection that burns fire-bright.
I lay, distraught, wondering why cannot you requite
The sentiments for you from which I cannot stray.
My soul, empty without you, you benight.
Is it perhaps your ambition to make me slight?
To lead me down this path toward inevitable dismay,
Grappling with an affection that burns fire-bright?
The truth, you have enabled me to see with perfect sight—
I now understand that you, I cannot sway.
My soul, empty without you, you benight.
Though I wish that our past I could rewrite,
On our hearts the burden of the truth would weigh; so I stay
Grappling with an affection that burns fire-bright.
My soul, empty without you, you benight.
