First Aid Kit
If I were an inhuman being,
with no need for the materials of sustenance
that keep my body operative,
I would be content to live out my days
with only a book for a companion
so I could pass the time
with familiar friends
and be taken away from myself.
But I am a human being,
and no matter how I yearn
to surpass components of vitality
and exist in the philosophical world,
they are orchestrators in my existence.
And as a human being,
I choose to keep with me
the emergency care
that will mend my ailments.
I choose bandages,
to cover the wounds
inflicted upon spirit and skin.
I choose ointments and salves,
to cleanse my body of toxins
That may impede upon both life and thought.
I choose tweezers,
to remove the splinters
that have fissured into my soul.
I choose scissors,
to cut away at the bandages
that allow avoidance of fears and reality.
I choose a first aid kit.
