The First Time I Saw You

The first time I saw you,

I felt nothing.

Unimpressed and numb.

So much for love at first sight.

The fifth time I saw you,

I wanted to be your friend.

Someone to bother

Late at night, or

Text right after class.

The sixth time I saw you,

We were friends.

Laughing and joking

As though we had known each other

Our whole lives.

The one hundred-and-seventh time I saw you,

It was different.

Highly impressed and joyous.

I wanted to be around you,

Just in your presence.

The one hundred-and-fiftieth time I saw you,

I felt something I had never felt before.

Breathing in your air

Was something special.

It was love

At one hundred-and-fiftieth sight.

The one hundred-and-sixty-first time I saw you,

There had been a mistake.

A terrible accident,

A purposeful accident,

Not an accident at all.

The one hundred-and-seventieth time I saw you,

I tried to explain for almost the

Tenth time,

I wasn't thinking,

I loved you,

It happened to others

All the time.

The one hundred-and-seventy-first time I saw you,

We ended.

We crashed and we burned

Like in your favorite racing game.

My tears,

Your persistence.

The two hundredth time I saw you,

I wanted to be your friend.

Someone to bother

Late at night, or

Text right after class.

The two hundred-and-first time I saw you,

We were not friends.

Things need time

To heal and scab.

The three hundredth time I see you,

Things will be different.
