Fitting the Mold

Mom, why do expect me to be like you?

What can I say to make you like Me?

For how I am and what I do,

Why do I have to be like you?

I know you say you’re black, and that’s ok. 5

But you say it because you want to,

When I say it, it’s because I have to.

I know you want me to be like you,

But I’m telling you, I don’t have too.

You didn’t fail mom. I promise. 10

I’m sorry I’m not the daughter you wanted me to be.

I’m sorry I don’t fit into the mold that you wanted to shape me.

It’s hard enough to be me.

To feel one way, to not be free,

But I’ll never be what you want me to be. 15

I’m sorry mom that I disappoint you.

It’s not my fault that I look this way.

Would you feel the same way if I were gay?

Then what would you say?

Don’t worry, I’m not. I didn’t fail you there. 20

I know you made this mold of how I’m supposed to be.

And I know that you’re disappointed that it doesn’t fit me.

You tell me enough that you’ll need therapy.

But damnit, what about me!

How do you think that makes me feel? 25

Not being able to fit your mold, your idea of what I should be.

I’m sorry I like Taylor Swift. Is that a crime?

I’m sorry I’m not as black as you.

I’m sorry I consider myself to be Jewish.

I’m sorry you think you failed mom, I really am. 30

Mommy I’m sorry. Please don’t be mad.

Mommy please, can’t you just like me for me?

I’ll never be good enough I know.

I just don’t know what you want from me!

I need your help Mommy. 35

Let me make my own mold-

I don’t fit yours and it’s getting old.

Mommy, I’m sorry.

But now it’s time to let me,

Be Me. 40
