Flavors

Spicy. Salty. Sweet. Sour.

Poetry comes in all different flavors.

There's one for me and one for you.

I tend to prefer the salty ones

With stories sadder than my life.

But I don't mind if a couple comedies

Visit like a rainbow after a rainstorm.

Of course I'm very thankful for my life

and the fact that I have a warm-hearted family,

But it's hard to say that I'm the happiest person alive,

Especially when people I don't even know say I'm a terrorist.

That's not salty, that's just wrong.

Honestly, what did I ever do?

I'm just a girl.

One that has feelings and thoughts like any other.

I've gotten used to making sure I always have a smile on my face,

Even when I'm having a bad day.

Because you never know when people suddenly change their minds about Muslims

Maybe they'll see me and realize that I'm a nice person?

And not someone who's going to bomb the nation?

Anyhow, poetry is a friend.

It won't judge me for wearing a hijab,

It'll comfort me

Tell me that it's okay if I'm sad or frustrated

Or even if I want to pull someone's hair out

And that I don't need to pretend in front of it.

I can be myself.

A 17 year old girl trying to get used to life.
