Flying
Eight years old
Watching the world
With my eyes closed.
Wind whispers in my ear
Playing with tendrils of my hair
The sun dancing with the tulips.
The coarse rope in my fingers
Holding on casually as my legs
Sway up and back down, in rhythm.
Eight years old
Smiling toward the heavens
Day dreaming the day away.
The ground taunting me
Because my feet don't touch it.
It doesn't matter, I'm flying.
In my own little world
Thinking about places I've never been
Letting my mind drift slowly.
Eight years old
High off the ground
Flying toward the sky.
The ground can't have me
I'm already gone, flying
Floating into the sun like Icarus.
I am soaring! Above the world,
Care-free and beautiful
like Cleopatra.
I am safe! Free of pain,
Strong-willed and independent
like Athena.
I am goddess of the sky,
Flying, feeling, dreaming,
My heart finally at ease.
Eight years old
Living in fantasy
Wishing that reality,
Didn't hurt so much.
Eight years old.
I wish I could fly.
