The Forest of Our Lives

We live our lives like trees Connections flying between us like bees We lay down roots Until life comes along and we uproot And we move Our leaves and our limbs bear witness to The marijuana smoke floating up from our mouths The loving, aching, beat of two teenage lovers embracing in bed Or the drug-free, unexposed, happy to be so Not judging their brethren who made a different choice And the abstinent, silently holding hands and flashing smiles At those that don't adhere to the same doctrine of love We are elms, oaks, firs, all different kinds of trees Living different lives Yet still our branches embrace and we connect on levels More than physicality, some ethereal realm where we share Our very life force, are dependent on one another For one tree alone will be suffocated by the carbon dioxide We produce, the consequences of our actions stifling That one poor tree. We need all of us to process the world, To cope, to stay strong, to be embraced when we are weak We live our lives like trees Connections flying between us like bees And though we may be uprooted We will never forget all the branches that once our trunks. So don't ever feel alone little sapling Because you are sheltered by all the trees around you And no matter what you may think Someone will always be there to share In your pain and care When you need someone, Because trees never grow alone.
