Forever Broken

They say it’s supposed to last forever,

A bond never to be broken.

Are “forever” and “never” so hard to understand?

“Until death do us part” is what you said,

But why are you apart if neither of you are dead?

“It’s not your fault” I hear all the time.

Who’s is it then, if it isn’t mine?

“We used to love each other”

Oh, how I wish that weren’t a past-tense verb.

“We just didn’t get along very well.”

Then why did you get together in the first place?

“That is just like your mother or father!” they scoff.

Why make unnecessary comments like that?

“I don’t want to talk about this!”

If you don’t, how will I ever know?

“There are many reasons. You wouldn’t understand.”

What makes you think that?

“Why do you have all those old pictures?”

Why not try to remember days of delight and dreamlike simplicity?

“What can I say to make you feel better?

Nothing. You’ve said enough.
