Forget

I bought you a Christmas present
And shoved it under my bed
And I’ll keep it there
For years to come
Until the feel of your name leaves me nothing but numb

Like you left me, at one
In the morning, 7 months After
When I thought I couldn’t bear one
Single moment more without you
And I called you on a school night
Because the memories of your voice just didn’t do
The things to me that they used to
And I was scared to fall out of love with the enemy

The enemy actively at war with me
You triggered the first atomic bomb my heart’s ever seen
Sunk my ships in the harbor
To prove I knew how to swim
And I know there are other fish in the ocean
But you
You were my sea

And this Christmas, on my wish list
I’ll ask Santa for forgiveness
And intelligence
Because, gosh darn dangit
I can’t ever let this happen again

They say when you fall in love, you’re screwed
But they never mention what happens
When you escape that cold clutch of death
And climb back up the cliff

In the aftermath
How to put your life back together again
It’s painful to know its possible
That I never really needed you
My silly teenage infatuation
