The Forgotten

I follow you everywhere you go

Only to sit and be forgotten

You put me in the most unreachable place

Because you know you will never use me

Yet for some reason you keep me around

Maybe because I contain something that you treasure

But not even I know what I possess

For I’m just an empty shell

I am only the cover of the book

For even if one day you did choose to come look inside

You would not find what you were looking for within me

For I am hollow and my content is irrelevant to your desire

For I am solely second hand paper

Recycled into a cheap box where you can store your things

Yet despite how valuable I try to convince myself I am

I know I am nothing but a container to the things you value

For I know it’s not the box you value

But what's inside

And even the that seems to go unnoticed

Yet if this is the case, why do you tempt us?

You move us from classroom to classroom and from school to school

But for what?

So we can sit there and collect dust

We watch you day in and day out as you pace and rant and lecture

But why do you want us to experience all this?

Why do you want to torture us in such a way as you know we will forever be useless to you?

I don't understand why you do the things you do

And I don't understand what I did to be taunted in such a cruel way

If I  had legs just know I wouldn’t stay

And if I could speak just know I’d scream

But I don't have legs so I’m forced to stay

And I cannot speak so I remain silent

So I am trapped in myself

Because of who I am

You walk all over me

And because of who you are I listen

You own me

And I am only an empty shell…

Just the little red box

On the top shelf
