Forgotten Hero

Where is the flag waving in the wind? Where are the mourners? The salutation of guns? There were guns, yes, But not in salute; Only in murder and bloodshed. A rain of bullets Originating from all sides, Hitting flesh and metal, and splashing; Splashing like children in the water. Is this defending the honor of the homeland? Is this an honorable death? Two thoughts too many, A distracted mind is dangerous here. My gun slightly lowered, Leaving me vulnerable, and I fall, a bullet slicing through my heart And the current carrying my body out to sea. I sink to the ocean's bottom Never reaching Normandy, Never again seeing home, Buried at sea.
