To a former love

Dear sensation of peace and shelter,

We met at the end of July

Daily messages manifested into one piece of paper

That piece of paper tied my arms together

and pushed me onto a bus at 3:30 in the morning

Insomnia took over and my thoughts were filled with “what ifs”

Sitting under the monument, I felt dizzy

Was it lack of sleep?

No, it was a complete and utter lack of love

I saw you minutes later and my heart burst

I have never felt so much pain and infatuation in one moment

    Both are equally uncomfortable

Two eyes, blank, staring into mine

My soul leaped out and embraced your body

    Your arms did not reciprocate

They lay at your side cold, and uninviting

Our fingers never intertwined, leaving my hands limp and awkward

However, our lips touched when we said goodbye

    The purpose you ask?

So that a message could glide through the grooves of your teeth

and singe the back of my throat

“My dear, this is only out of pity”

In that moment I knew that this love had gotten up from that bus seat and

walked out into the dim street lights, alone

This love was now a missing person, waiting to be uncovered from the depths of the earth

Oh, how I long to be found by a soft touch and a nice smile

Distance was not the perpetrator of this crime, it was the little boy with a grenade

And the grenade was my heart

One click and the cosmos of our affection were dispersed into the atmosphere

Now I am left with pieces from the love inside of me, which are also just ashes

One day, these ashes may be used to grow a garden of passion

For now, these ashes still contain the heat that burns my skin

The smell of fire stings my nostrils and all I can ever think about is you

You were the fire that once ignited my soul, and now you are the fire that scorched my home

And my home was and will always be you.
