Fossil Fuels

Fossils laughed.  Fossils breathed.

The carboniferous fern beside the archaeopteryx.

Scales developed feathers as feet evolved

On suicidal salmon to walk upstream without dying.

You once told me the salmon I caught in the steam

Were reincarnated.  Earth rotates but the sun dwarfs.

I used to believe in romance, in burning buried sunlight.

My tongue samples rich buttermilk and blueberries,

Pancakes on Sunday with an orange glass.

Strips of bacon spitting as the boar sinks

Encased in mud, buried, compacting.  Fossils, burning.
