Free
Young, lost, and confused
My heart was cold, small, and abused
I had no outlet to release
I was my own enemy in the streets
My mother would leave all the time
My father in prison because of crime
Raising little girls that weren’t mine
Not knowing how to balance words and time
In my heart pain wanted to come out
Tape to my mouth but I needed to shout
One day I picked up a paper and red pen
That’s when my poetry love affair began
I wrote till my fingers started to hurt
Not knowing a masterpiece was my work
Writing my heartaches, pain, and love
Writing to my ancestors and angels up above
Poetry freed my anger and let me just be me
Poetry gave me wings and I finally felt free
