Once Upon a Time,

there was a girl.

Her brain was big

and her personality

was a swirl.

Her mother sighed

and her father groaned

everytime she left her hair

uncombed.

She played in the dirt

while the other girls

played inside.

She was a black sheep

in a herd of white.

Her mother read her books

of fairies and queens.

But she liked the ones about

war and machines.

She hated the stories of love

and evil step mothers;

A story of independence

and adventure was her wonder.

Her mind wondered why

were the princesses

‘too fat’ or ‘too thin’

and why was the thrown

given to their next of kin?

She didn’t understand why

the girls needed a boy

and why they all got to

live happily ever after

in joy.

Once Upon A Time

there was a girl.
She wrote her own story

through her life

and her actions.

Being free from confinement

brought her satisfaction.
