Free Verse

I write words When my heart is full Like a cup of water that my four-year-old sister gave me That spilled over the sides And left a messy trail behind it. I write words When the wind pushes the trunks Of trees until they are parallel from the ground And the trees look like they'll break When I write words I don't break. I take them and whittle them away Mold them and carve them Wait for another chance to say That words are punches and kisses on the neck They are the arms that pull us closer And they are the raindrops that splatter On our face when left alone and mud-covered In a field somewhere off the road. I write words To take that memory Put it in a jar And pull it out when I want to, not All the time. I write words To take back control.
