Free verse

With a star

around my neck

on a chain

that singles me out

makes me different

than everyone else in the room.

It makes me a target

for people who hate

for no reason

people who are different

than them

act different

than them.

They lash out

at us.

Try to hurt us

but they can’t

keep us down.
