Freeing Love
And you came here tonight, just like you do almost every night. You felt the cold bars of the cell, slapped hard cement, and said, What are you still doing here? You smiled, but I avoided your glance. I can't honestly look you in the eyes tonight, and I'm sorry because I know sorry will never be enough. But you can't understand! No. Not today nor yesterday will bring up the haunting truth of the prisoner here. And you said, I just don't understand who you are. Why are you here? You just don't see this dark side that comes with me everywhere! I'm best when I'm with you. So I start the story of what if.
What if when I'm with you, I respect myself because of the way you respect me.
What if when I'm around you, I desire wisdom because of the way you use yours to help others.
What if when I'm with you, I pray because I've seen the way your faith has moved mountains.
What if when I'm with you, I force self discipline because I want to be a woman you would choose.
And it's these things that you see and that I crave to take over my body and push out the dirt that holds me in these chains! I long for them with my heart, but deny them as they form words on my tongue. I'll save that for later. And you see me waiting, so you cry, Now! But instead I kick, scream, and fight to the death. I scratch, claw, and spit lies in your face; I wait for you to hate me. Instead, you smile and say, I love you. You reach your hands through those cold thick bars, and hold my heart so gently. Then the prison guard ushers you out and I step back into my darkness, with new hope now. But, my chains still clank and the noise burns my ears. I'll be free soon. Please wait.
