a friend I knew

A friend I knew, he had a plan.
To visit far off distant land.
With inner self to reconnect;
Through knowledge, thought and introspect.
Distressing memories and pain,
Self loathing, bitterness, distain.
Arrayed like trophies, each one etched;
With suffering, in his mind sketched.
A brother gone, forefront of mind
A savage loss; a blow, unkind

He’d lost a friend, companion.
Who’s life’s connection, thought forgone.
Decided to deliver self;
To come what may and damn the world.
Who’d not discussed his inner realm,
To loved ones, close, that could hold helm.
And could have steered his mind from grief;
That gnawed at life, like shark-sharp teeth.
Who took his life without a bye,
Before descent to chaos cry

My Friend I think would rewrite theme
In mind to discuss different memes
To inscribe thoughts with different scenes;
Of sunny skies and pastures green.
And tales he will regale when old,
To brother, whose remain untold.
Of being, life and joyous times
Sweetness/compassion, love sought rhymes
He’ll rename sorrow, call it joy.
A different script he will employ

He’ll sit with brother, hold his hand,
With soft words spoke, make no demands.
No probing questions will enquire
Of brothers final ends desire
Just general discourse, interludes...
No answers needed, none pursued
They’ll laugh at jokes they used to tell;
Remember tales with sweet regale.
The times of journeys, footstep worn,
Of trails and tracks and giddied runs

He’ll reminisce on times gone past
And cheer a drink each time they laugh.
They’ll talk of foibles, mice and men.
And drink imbued return again;
Repeating as you do, when drunk.
Till sleep induced, retire and hunk
Awake refreshed to start new day
With scant regard for life’s dismay
They’ll walk, they’ll talk and laugh with joy
Prod and poke, generally annoy

I’d like to think my journeyed friend
Whose fight with thoughts, has made amends
With demons he’ll now cast aside
And reconcile in brothers pride
For pride it was that took him past
The breath he knew would be his last
It’s not friends fault, he holds no blame
Should not hold on to guilt nor shame
And brother, let him rest in peace
To slumber in eternal sleep
