A funeral hosted by children
A funeral hosted by a child
is not a drab thing
instead they color the world
and forget all the world
and its suffering.
At a funeral hosted by a child
you wear your best dress up clothes
a princess, a fairy,
or something in between
then you scrounge through the woods
finding this flower or that.
At a funeral hosted by a child
you help to make a raft
of Spanish moss
wound tight and flat
you load it with acorns
and small berries.
At a funeral hosted by a child
you lay the flowers on top
a crocus,
a dandelion,
one of grandmothers roses,
tiny purple flowers
that don't really have a name.
At a funeral hosted by a child
you set your raft afloat
a river, a pond, the ocean
it doesn't matter
you watch it drift and
you whisper "I miss you,
I hope you're safe."
then you go inside
and put away your frilly clothes.
At a funeral hosted by a child
there is nothing to bury
there is no coffin to scare
there is no black for mourning.
There are memories,
and flowers,
and hopes,
and possibly a sigh.
Because at a funeral hosted by a Child
no one truly died.
