A Funny Thing Happened

A funny thing happened on the way to my dreams

His lyrics constantly spit out racist themes

"Rapists!"

"Criminals!"

He called my people and I

Still

America let it slide

They tell me "ILLEGAL, STOP TRYING!"

All I'm good for anyways is lying

His ancestors violently revoked the power from Native American hands

Yet

He says "illegals: you steal jobs, you steal education, you steal land!"

A funny thing happened on the way back home

After my pace quickened because I was alone

"Sht, sht! Sht, sht!”

He called out from his car window

As if cat calls were his only linguo

To him I was a dog

Next time I’ll make sure to ask him

Will it be cool when they do this to your sister, dawg?

I never knew who I was until they told me

Undeserving illegal

Dog

Unworthy

No

I am not who they say I am

I am thousands of foreign students chained by extra work and extra fright

Finding scraps of opportunity worth the fight

Segregated from our dreams because we were born on different land

Resilient to the failure for illegals that is currently in high demand

I am yes, despite no after no after no

Way I'm giving up

DREAMERs

Never do

You know who I am?

I am woman after woman walking the streets alone in fear

Look left, look right, up, down

Is he near?

Told to not provoke and cover up

Still

I remain a soldier for my rights using love

Everybody

Didn't all their mommas teach them to respect women's bodies?

Double standards made me unbreakable

Let me know when they’re ready to make a change, yo

Worthy

Righteous

Woman

I’m sure they don’t understand

But as it turns out

I am not who they say I am
