Galaxy Eyes

I once thought I saw the galaxies twirling in a pair of eyes They unfolded and gleamed with every secret ever told There were laugh lines running like rivers through continents around a mouth that opened to reveal long lost stores of wonder And I woke up singing I thought I heard your laugh and my breath ran out to meet you before I could turn and look You make my lungs feel tight like I’ve been smoking a pack a day And my brain can’t come up with things better than roses are red, violets are blue, I like your face You make me grasp at the world, take it all in, gather all the beauty to give you You make me want to dance and break the rules and question things I thought I knew When I see your galaxy eyes, I remember what breathing feels like Oxygen rushing into my lungs, filling up so I can float But every inspiration will become an expiration date that I fear more and more as my knuckles turn white holding on to you The very things that draw me close will push me away without you being ever the wiser But I can’t stay away I feel like I’m stepping onto the ice with you, each step unsure As much as I stomp my foot in front of me to check the strength, I know I could still fall And I am falling Falling like bombs on poor nations Falling like rain on dry fields I can feel the maker of all this beauty smile when we ignite childlike wonder in the other’s eyes You’re a flight risk but I’ve always longed after the birds You constantly make me feel old and young and stupid and brilliant all at once But I’m not even sure you see this tsunami crashing in my prefrontal cortex I’d like to build a snow fort with you We could be like penguins in the ice And I wouldn’t even mind if there was an avalanche and we got stuck for a while We could tell each other stories until we fell asleep and our laughter would warm up our world if even for a minute I want to see things as you do I stand on my head, squint an eye to try and I listen to your Technicolor ideas that paint my reality Your ears are like trapdoors into your brain I sometimes laugh at what you let tumble in and stay Let your mouth open wide so I can climb in and look around a while Each word that makes my lungs forget their purpose forms right here You pour them out, let them fall over me Every time I’m on a plane that makes my stomach drop I think of my last seconds Would your voice be the last one I would hear? As I plummet to the ground, I think of dialing your number And hearing the “hey what’s up” just in time to pack it tight in my mind as we reach the earth As the dream comes to an end And I wake up Singing
