the game of the birds

you forgot me when you said you wouldn’t

i loved you when i said i couldn’t

we were so fragile - like birds in a thunderstorm.

taking cover so we wouldn’t get hurt.

but i guess i was the weakest of the birds

i got tossed around in the storm like a goddamn baseball

you were the referee in an unfair game of losses and wins and fails and falls

you got tired of your players faster than you recruited them.

so now i hope it’s just you out there in the storm and on the ball field

i hope you’re all alone and everyone you loved left you just as you’ve left them.
