Gaps

The gaps ‘tween your fingers grow wider, As you learn things you think that you know, With clues that you think you have gathered, From places you think that you go, And while ‘cross your mind run the daydreams, The star of your life wilts away, Like flowers in fall, and life after all, In the end what’s forgot will decay. We mourn the sun’s set after nightfall, When darkness has stolen our heart, Only after the cold leaves us weeping, Do we know what we should from the start, Like the songbird that’s lost in the winter, And forests rent hard from the land, We break through the bend, and scream in the end, Only then do we first understand. There’s a price must be paid in the ending, For what we want most of all things, But one choice is the lot we are given, And all of the feeling it brings, So our path wrongly chosen is final, All the tears that fall later don’t count, Yet they glisten in flight, falling hard from the height Of a heartbreak we’ll never surmount. As you’re walking the highway of sorrow, Hear the words on the wind biting cold, There are other fish in the sea, just, Not all of them are gold… But what is a sprinkle of pleasure, Without that mountain of pain? The price that you pay, the hero would say, As he walks away in the rain.

This is a piece I wrote with the main idea being, "You don't know what you have until it is gone." Some think is has to do solely with heartbreak, but I think that it can be interpreted as having a larger picture and message about anything we care about and lose.
