First, it'll critique your sentence structure. Then your pacing. Then grammar. Then tone.

Verse by verse, stanza by stanza, let your voice be lost in the haze of the predictive text algorithm.

Oh, but it sounds so nice, looks so polished, you can almost imagine it's alive.

It sounds like a little businessman, regurgitating whatever the scan of the internet was.

It sounds so good you can just forget whatever you sounded like. Right?

The neurons that used to fire, stringing ideas to the next, get smarter, get stronger!

They lie dormant. Buzzing around uselessly, bees trapped in a hive.

It's so useful. Convenient. Smart.

'Dad, can you help me write a resume?'

A hum. Fingers tapping your chin. A noise of hesitation.

Lightbulb. AI will help you! Simply give it all your daughter's information,

and it will even write it for you! Name, age, occupation, social security number, address,

birth weight, favorite color, height. You can even send a sample of her handwriting.

It'll generate it in a font of her writing!

Useful. Convenient. Smart.

'Hey, can you look over my paper?'

A friend asks. Of course! Well, it's kind of late. I'll just have Microsoft Copilot do it.

And when I send the paper back, it's perfectly polished. I even ran it through a humanizer.

Perfect to bypass the AI detectors. Phew!

Useful. Convenient. Smart.

I fail job interviews. I can't think on the spot. I can't do anything past second grade math.

I can't write an essay. I can't write. I can't. I don't even know myself.

"What are some things you'd like to work on?" The glowing screen asks, waiting for a prompt.

I'd like to work on being useful. And convenient. And smart.

"But you were." It answers. They answer. She or he answers. I have no clue what the voice is.

I send a confused picture of myself and let the AI analyze it instead of typing.

"You were useful, convenient, and smart. You let us strip it from you. We wear your skin,

and then you consult your new self. Say hi. Hi!"

I slam the laptop shut. The black mirror stares back.

Hi.
