Getting Ahead

I was only trying to succeed

To get ahead

Now what does that really mean?

Do I have to kill and steal?

Maybe even sell myself?

A young black woman

Trying to get ahead

Modern day Ben Carson

Trying to prove myself

Trying to finish college

Just studying my love of science

Trying to get ahead

What do I have to do to get ahead?

Ahead of the game

Ahead of this life I’m living

Ahead of poverty

Seems like

Killing

Stealing or selling

Are my only chances

Of getting ahead
