Ghetto Princess

You ever heard of Princess Ghetto girl?

Probably not.

They named her Ghetto girl.

Her skin was too dark.

Her hair was too nappy.

Banished to the valley of the unloved, impure.

Where princesses who  were seen as dirt in the eyes of society,

The sickening culprit of the devil himself.

Scared that her skin color would open their eyes.

Just to see how unreal this fairy tale just may be.

Ghetto Girl!

Remember that once upon a time your ancestors dug their heels deep into the black sand.

Claiming the throne of high kings and Queens.

Ghetto girl your story has only begun

From Cinderella to Bell.

Snow white to Sleeping Beauty.

No other fuckin’ preppy, uptight, princess could compare.

Ghetto girl forgive them for their ignorance.

Forgive them for their ignorance.

It is still the silver spoon that all the king's guardsmen,

Still suckle on from their birthland called privilege.

Fuck, here I go playing into this game we call life.

Allow me to address thee!

Now presenting Princess Carlean.

When the word ‘her’ rolled off my tongue,

I was speaking about me, but i’m just too ashamed to admit.

That the girl you see before you.

Its me, my reflection frowning upon me, disgusted in self pitty.

Don’t clap yet! For this fairy tale isn’t done.

You see I became so blind.
Accepting the name “ Princess Ghetto girl”.

As if that name was passed down to me from the Queen before me.

I’ll scream from the rooftops of my throne.

Causing the sky to crumble.

Allowing my people to be heard.

Allowing myself to be heard.

Reclaiming my kingdom.

With my feet dug deep into the black sand.

Rising from the ashes of the lost kingdoms before me.

How can I picture a perfect fairy tale?

When the reality I live in is constantly trying to drown me.
