A Gift Given Unto Me

Your birth was a blessing

You are everything a sister could need.

We were born two days and nine years apart,

Yet we still share everything.

Morning hugs you give to me daily,

However goodnight kisses are no longer a need.

You said that you were older and kisses made you feel like a little baby.

You sing silly tunes to show off your wild dance moves.

And when I feel silly, I join along and groove too.

We make songs everyday.

We sing about dinosaurs and movies,

We dance to rock, jazz, hip hop, and the '80s groovy groupies.

We sing about milkshakes, candy, and our love for lego fights.

And when it is almost time for bed, you can hear our laughter linger throughout the night.

We reminisce about a funny face or one of your frightening dreams

Then we pray to our Heavenly Father to keep our family safe and at ease.

Right before we go to bed and lie down to take our rest,

I tell you a funny joke,

A joke you and I will only get.

I never asked for much, but when I did it was you.

A dear brother to cherish.

A brother that is kind,

A brother who grew,

and has a mind like mine.

Your imagination runs wild.

You’ll mature faster than I ever dreamed.

You will soar and run miles,

You can accomplish anything.

We imagine life in different forms,

We walk with dinosaurs in a terrain,

Fly high with astronauts, swim with dolphins,

And wish we could stay young everyday.

When I am sad, you take the time to ask me why.

I trust you with my secrets and what my heart keeps inside.

You dry my eyes and say, “do not cry anymore.”

You remind me that I am a big girl and I’ll grow stronger than I was before.

You never judged my thoughts or feelings I express.

You tell me you are my brother and confess our love with no regrets.

Sometimes we may fuss and become angry just for a while,

But the roots of our love are deeper than our complaints and whiny growls.

Mom and dad make us hug and make up for our grimace start.

By the end of the day, we realize nothing can tear us apart.

As I, your sister, grow older each day

I worry about our depart when college takes me away.

For nine long years our daily visits have been nothing but joyous:

Sneaking each other’s food, being loud, rambunctious, and sometimes an annoyance.

When we have to depart, I’ll never forget

How our love grew stronger than the day we first met.

I’ll come to visit as much as I can

No one knows where college will take me,

but I know I will always have you, my dear best friend.

Because I love you big boy,

You are still my baby man.

I’ll take care of you forever

Because our unconditional bond will never end.
