The Gift Paradox
A gift card and a handwritten note.
You hate receiving girt cards because you think they mean that the giver doesn’t know anything about you.
The decorative plastic means that they didn’t take the time to know you and it’s a personal affront to you:
How dare they even try to let you know that they appreciate you with a gift card?
But I got you a gift card because I know this about you. You hate gift cards. I know that about you.
