The Gift of Sight

A 7 pound bundle they handed to me,

A pup with a future to help someone see.

She'd spend hours at my side each and every day,

Learning her commands, such as sit, down, and stay.

Every night we'd make time to play,

before waking up and doing everything again the next day.

For 18 months I had my girl at my side,

And then I received the letter that it was time for my best friend to become a guide.

Turn in day came and I fought back the tears,

As I thought about the freedom and independance Chloe would bring someone in the coming years.

A few weeks went by and Chloe was no longer a puppy in vest,

A guide dog in harness, she sure looked her best.

Before I knew it she was whirrling her trainers around trees and poles,

And obeying commands cofidently, even stopping at holes.

After six months of waiting I received the call of my dreams,

My girl had been matched with a partner, someone who could not see.

The following week I watched as my girl took the stage,

A guide dog graduate, a pup that I had the opportunity to raise.

That day I let the tears flow,

As they were tears of joy and pride in a job well done.
