The Girl in the Mirror
Why won't you look at me?
I'm asking you a question...
Why?
Why won't you look at me?
I ask myself as I stand in front of a mirror.
I just can't understand
why my reflection doesn't look like me.
She looks insecure and weak...
or is that me?
And she's the one who looks strong and beautiful.
Your hands made me strong you know?
Because your hands knew my body
better than I knew myself
and I was used to you abusing me.
So you made me strong
Because your hands knew just how to mask my insecurities.
Your hands masked my insecurities
with bruises
and bruises make you strong.
Now that girl in the mirror is just weak
that's not me.
It can't be
It can't be me
because I'm Strong!
That can't be me because I still have bruises,
bruises you can't even see
that girl just can't be
can she?
Or are my ego's bruises just my insecurities
and my tears are just them resurfacing.
Why?
Why won't you look at me Mommy?
Do I remind you too much of yourself?
Is that girl in the mirror who won't look at me
Just my mother, in me?
He knew your body too, didn't he mommy?
Hr knew just how to make you forget
your insecurities too, didn't he mommy?
Why?
Why won't you look at me Papi?
Am I not enough of a woman
for your eyes to keep a hold of mine
for longer than 3 seconds?
Or do I just look too much like the woman you're so tired of
because she kept your hands so busy with all of her insecurities?
Why?
Why won't you look at me brothers?
Am I the symbol of your broken home
and you're all too busy trying to keep it together
trying to hold yourselves together
that you forgot little sister?
Am I a reminder of your unanswered prayers for a little brother?
Brothers,
Am I the reason you HATE God?
Why?
Why won't you look at me?
I'M ASKING YOU A DAMN QUESTION!
I hear the girl in the mirror answer back,
"Maybe if you stopped crying
just long enough to open your eyes,
you'd realize
we look just alike."
And she was right.
