To the Girl Who Told Me to Follow My Heart
To the girl who told me to follow my heart…
To the girl who told me to follow my heart,
I never used to listen to you, even though I should have from the start
I followed my brain instead, constantly battling with myself, getting caught up in my head
I over thought, I continue to overthink
Never realizing just once that I was on the brink
On the brink of a life threatening breakdown caused by the stress of me not wanting to let down, you and those closest to me
So I thought just maybe if I use my brain a little more, think a little harder,
I would then in turn become a little smarter
My heart told me to go and my brain told me to stop and then I was stuck.
Stuck between a yes and a no, a “right” and a “wrong”
Nowhere to go, nowhere to run… but you
You told me to follow my heart, but I was stubborn, I was scared
Never completely aware…
of how that one simple word of advice could change my life for the better...
Yet I still sit here and contemplate over even writing you this letter.
You have this phrase tattooed, imprinted in black cursive ink on your chest,
This is how I know that your heart and soul will never truly rest
Following my heart is all I have to do,
In order to get one step closer to you…
Why is it so difficult?
Why is this so hard?
Staring at my notebook with your phrase that I have stared
I am caught up in my head again…
The walls are closing in
My heart is beating faster now,
I can feel it through my skin
However, I realize what I have to do now
Your words are my key
Following my heart is the way to get back to the real me
Stop over thinking
Stop getting stuck
Listen to the beating of your own chest, remember to never give up
So, to the girl who told me to follow my heart…
That is what I am now willing to do
You have changed my life for the better with that single little phrase that you have tattooed
