Give Up

Get up and get ready for school New day, same routine Same schedule, same teachers Falling asleep in English class again Bad attitude, bad grades I can’t help but think about her 4 years, 6 months and 23 days since we lost her Yet the same feeling tears my heart apart. She did the cooking. She cleaned the house. She did the laundry. She helped with homework. New “mom”, Dad’s constantly at work The woman tries to control me Things will never be the same as they were 4 years, 6 months, and 23 days ago I wonder if I would have good grades Like those nerds in my class They’re all lucky to have great families Yet mine will never be the same I run, trying to release the pain. It doesn’t leave. Back to school, same routine But I’d rather just quit. Giving up is so much easier. Mom didn’t have to live with these obstacles. She would encourage me. She’s the only one who can help me succeed. “Push through it, honey. It will all be worth it in the end. You’re smart. You can do this. Follow your dream and get to Harvard.” But Mom’s still gone, And nobody else cares. 4 years, 6 months, and 23 days And I just want to give up.
