Give Me Some Spines

I want to be a cactus.

I want to be rough around

the edges;

To form an armour around

my skin.

To be free from what

Most think that beauty is.

I want to be a cactus.

I want to shield myself

from pain;

To ward off those who try

to hurt me.

But take a cactus out of

The sun and it too will shrivel.
