glass birds
two glass birds
floating in a pond
one is breaking
while the other one looks on
one is singing
a lovely song
one's been sinking
all along
the birds
they float so close together
a shot breaks off another feather
both are sinking
both are thinking
why can't we just meld together
the sun grows brighter
but the birds can't sing
they're swimming up
and everything
is here to weigh them down
their pieces swirling
to sandy ground
they're drowning now
and more and more
fragments
dip below the surface
betraying their only purpose
the cadence of their dying cries
littering the empty skies
both are blinking
both are thinking
weren't we meant to be together
I'll lend you another feather
they break themselves to mend each other
but the pieces don't quite fit
and they both begin to slip
two glass birds
broken on the floor
