Glasses

(Glasses by Savannah Dodd) Was I wearing glasses when I was
raped I bought big glasses with black
round frames they're flimsy but I wear them
like armor I wear them to say I'm
bookish modest unfuckable this is not
okay yesterday I saw a woman locked in a
car she sat in the passenger seat and
the man in the driver's seat was pulling
her arms neck waist she was crying
banging on the window pulling the door
handle to no avail my friend knocked on
the driver's side window I pulled it the
locked passenger door my wife said the
driver I don't care said my friend this
is not okay the man relented unboxing
the door the woman fled on foot I
followed to offer her my phone and
tissues I patted her shoulder trying to
convey without the burmese words that I
don't have that I understand abusive
relationships sexual assault and other
traumas all too often associated with a
woman's life this is not okay she
refused the phone and tissues but she
didn't pull away she collected herself
and walked back in the direction of the
car I can only speculate what happened
next and what pulled her back financial
dependency emotional manipulation or
fear it's not mine to judge it's hers to
decide it's ours to say this is not okay
when I'm getting dressed to wall a city I don't know and I reach for my
glasses I wish that people around me
would reach for theirs to that they may
see it a woman's face the discomfort
that comes from every wink every
approving grunt every mislaid hand I was
not wearing glasses when I was raped I
was not wearing a miniskirt either but
these discussions about women's clothing or

old and I'm ready to lay down my armor
