Goodbye
People say to remember the good times,
And try and forget the bad.
I don’t think these people understand,
It makes it much more sad.
Inexperienced people say to me,
“When you’re forced to leave a place,”
They say “it’s easy to move on.”
But I know that’s not the case.
If it takes no struggle to leave,
When you’re forced to part from a place.
If it’s easy to move on,
Then it wasn’t called a home anyway.
When all of your things are gone,
And you’re lying on loner furniture
All of the fun, all of the times,
Come to you in a blur.
The lunches spent, the talks we’ve had.
The rumpus pillow fights.
The tears that dropped, the friends made,
The long sleepover nights.
How all our hearts were touched, our feelings hurt,
and all the lessons learned.
The secrets told, the love we shared,
And how our lives were turned.
They’re friends, best friends,
They’ve always come in first.
They’ve been there for our main events,
The good ones and the worst.
It’s very hard to pack your things,
And suddenly move away.
It’s never easy to say goodbye to friends,
Who used to fill your day.
To leave a friend, to say, “goodbye,”
Is not an easy task.
To move away, to try and stop it,
With one more question asked.
“Do I really have to say goodbye?” I ask,
“Must we move away?”
“Yes,” Mom says in a saddened voice.
“But we’ll visit here someday.”
A lonely tear falls off my face,
Another rolls down my cheek.
This place has been my home and to leave,
I-I just can’t speak.
I turn back to see my friends wave,
I do just as they do.
They look sad and I see, they know,
At one time they’ll move, too.
I turn around and leave my friends,
And let out a little sob.
I’ll have to start from scratch again,
I’m a Navy Brat. I guess it’s just my job.
