Grandfather

I miss my grandfather

Every single day

And I don't realize it

Until I've seen him

I remember him

Tall and strong

With a wiry beard

And rough hands

Until I've seen him

I don't recall

Just how much he's changed

Since our last visit

I now see him

As what time has made

Weaker and grey

Over our separation

I held my grandfather

Weeks ago now

I felt his bones through his skin

And the rasp of his cough

I know that time

Is growing short

And we don't have much to spare

So I cherish my grandfather

I love him dearly

For what he is

A 12 pack of beer

And a cigarette in one hand

I hear him sometimes

Singing Johhny Cash in the car

Or  snoring in his chair

Because that's just who he is
