Grandma

It hit me by surprise

When I first saw her eyes

A look of hope, love, and generosity

That’s what it was

A kind gentle smile

A warm tight embrace

And love I could feel no place else

She raised me with dignity

Raised me with justice

Told me I was the most beautiful of all

She tucked me in bed

Read me bedtime stories

And always ran when I called

My grandma

A strong woman indeed

She yelled at my dad every time he was bad to me

My grandma

A wonderful woman indeed

Taught me to love myself before loving anything else because that’s what’ll make me happy

My grandma

A sweet woman indeed

She forgave before she got mad and hugged her way into peace

My grandma

It was she who inspired me

But grandma left too early

To a place far away

Leaving me to fend alone

But fear not, for her presence will always remain

Deep in my heart and soul

Because from the very first time

I met her eyes

I saw a look of hope, love, and generosity

That’s what it was

A kind gentle smile

A warm tight embrace

And love I could feel no place else
