The Greater Good
"As I breathe underwater slow,
Some power keeps me trapped below;
This must be where souls die once slaughtered,
I will be died when I see no longer.
While my soul dies, my body quakes
Trying to stop what it thinks is a mistake;
But there can not be hope to spare,
And my heartbeat shows I’m aware.
My sight now is lost in the echo,
Breaking promises to not let go;
And my body starts to fade to back,
Following Death down the track.
Alas! A light appears in the dark water.
I will not be sacrificed on the altar."
I think this sonnet for me is about how my parents are trying to change what I want to go to college for and are choosing majors that will not blend with my personality and who I am. I feel like they are trying to sacrifice who I am and what I have spent years figuring out about myself for the “Greater Good” of having a stable career. They are always times when I am on the edge of caving in following their wants but I also find something to stop me and seeing that I will not sacrifice myself for this cause. The sonnet face value talks about drowning then being save at the last moment. I using drowning as a conceit to my constant battle with my parents because they say that drowning is one of the most painful ways to die and if I give in to my parents, it will one of the most painful ways for who I am/have become to die as well.
