Greater Love

You were the star football player

You told me you weren’t like the others

Who was I to say "No" to the star?

I was young, naive and that was to your advantage

I thought everything you did was the norm in a relationship

Didn't like my friend? Gone.

Didn't approve of texting him/her? Erased.

Didn't like what my parents said? Disobeyed.

But because I heard the words I love you, it made everything okay

You loved the "Me" that you created in me

I am a murderer though. I killed that "Me"

I have overcome what was made to destroy me

And now

I am in love with the person who stares back at me in the mirror

There was a time in my life where I thought being obedient in a relationship was the way it should be. I was young and didn't know better. With a little help from my friends and a supportive family, I know better now. This peom is a story about me.
