Is the Greatest Mentor Yourself?

Every person draws from what they see.

And hear

And taste, so delicate, so fine and free.

Every person is a conglomerate of their feelings.

So from that

One can say that feelings are the greatest mentor of all.

They are the lens through which we view the world.

Even if we learn from the best,

It is the feeling of conviction that makes the artist.

Feelings come from everywhere.

From the sun,

From the rain as it batters as it is renewed to the earth.

From the scent of green grass in a sunlit meadow.

From a candle.

Even the fumes of a bus can snap one back to old memories that you thought you forgot.

From the cheers of proud parents at a soccer game or band competition,

The feeling of being a part something bigger than yourself,

The excitement of the holidays and a kiss underneath the mistletoe,

Summer road trips off to the forest or the mountains where it isn’t too hot,

The indescribable majesty of a sunset on the beach that moves one so deeply yet it is something that happens daily, without fail or cancellation.

Every day there is a sunset.

Every day is therefore an inspiration.

I look

And take it in, good or bad.

Even if it hurts to watch sometimes.

Reality can be cruel,

And often I wish I do not have to look.

It can be a bitter show to walk between the light and the dark.

Never stopping.

The thought of ceasing arriving, yet forcing it away is what I must do.

It is what we all must do, but it is easy to give up the fight.

To give up looking

For the little things, and to slip into a state of denial

But without looking, you cannot see the sunsets.
