Green

The slender branch lays

balanced between my fingertips

My eyes shut I see the

possibilities

An extended bow or double edged sword

Ready to vanquish the foes

of my backyard

But my eyes open and what

lays before me

Is just child’s play, no tool for life

The twig slips from my hand

rough edge rolling

coarsely

from my fingertips to the

hard ground below

There are no green leaves

draped from this branch

useless

No profit for my future

I stand

mottled light bleeding through

tree’s heavy canopy

Cold eyes gazing into

my future

But the rays warm me no more
