The Green Gates

The green gates appear as monoliths,

towering over me.

Leaving behind the comforting embrace

of a parent

I felt a tremendous sense of dread

at the work and responsibility that comes

with being a High School Student.

Now, as I graduate,

I sit and wonder at those green gates.

That which once seemed threatening now appear inviting,

beckoning me to leave my bubble,

as one phase of my life ends

and another begins.

I no longer can rely on my parents--there are no more do-overs.

For all decisions, I make now, be it grades, romances, or purchases,

I alone will be held accountable

I alone will be responsible

I alone will make them.
