A Group of Four Simple Words

They are a group of 4 simple words

Because I love you—who, me?

You told me you’d be home by eight.

It’s now midnight and I guess my old man is just running late.

You promised to be in the bleachers watching me play.

It’s only one game. I bet you’ll make it another day.

You told me from day one I could become whatever my heart desired.

Although, if the job isn’t making six figures then then I’m as useless as being retired.

I brought my report card home beaming with my first A letter.

You took one look and told me I could’ve done better.

You told me you’d never leave my side.

Come eighth grade it seemed like you went away to hide.

The news that following winter swept me away like a carriage.

“Petition for Dissolution of Marriage.”

It’s been a couple months without a word spoken.

Do I have to earn your love as if it were a gold token?

It seems like everything is going to bad.

It pains me to have to call you my dad.

My fist aimed at the dry wall.

It’s been almost 3 months without a call.

Ring Ring.

Oh, you’re sorry about everything you’ve done?

What do you know about being able to have relationships?

Where was the communication, trust, and love throughout the hardships?

The nights I stayed up to hear you walk through the door in the back.

It’s no wonder our relationship was being held up by only a tack.

I tried talking to you about my feelings.

It’s obvious you were never healing.

I shouldn’t have been naïve to the present lack of trust.

I guess the only thing as corrupt is a prostitute’s lust.

I want you to say those four simple words to me now.

You couldn’t even say them in your own wedding vow.

I’ve grown up since then and learned my lesson.

I guess this whole experience was kind of a blessin’.

A lack of Communication, communication, communication--

Was the detonation to this father-son relation.

After all, a relationship isn’t held together like glue—

Until you actually act out the words “Because I love you.”
