Grow Up

Suddenly candy's just not so appealing,

And days off of school are more stressful than freeing.

You’re looked at strangely for acting “too young”, as if acting boring shows that aging’s begun.

You've lost braces and pigtails,

Traded skateboard for car keys,

Your summer is for working, and you’ve realized the high cost of things.

The college questions are thrown at you frequently and you’re expected to have your future planned to a tee.

“Where are you going?”

“What will you do?”

“Why don’t you know this? How irresponsible of you!”

I guess this is the time I’m no longer a child,

When only months ago, parent signatures were required

Now I’m expected to know about everything

Forgive me for finding this concept confusing

So if I seem off or not highly in function

Please take a breath and let’s have a discussion

I can’t answer the questions you ask by the dozen

This transition from child to woman was sudden

I’m trying to learn and I’m doing my best

But school education taught me for different tests

I learned my abcs and my multiplication

But not about taxes and this humiliation

Forced on me so quickly without hesitation

By peers and family who have “justification”

To judge me and prod me and my reputation

If I don’t have plans made before graduation.
