Growing Up on Drugs

My heart is an estuary Of ecstasy and purity As the stream grew into a river Lengthened in size and age And saw new land The young fresh water met the immense sea In purity and ecstasy My heart is an estuary That one dumb day When I still believed in glaciers Look upon the new year: glaciers’ power is melting Wrong ways made right And experience trumps textbook Blue Batman has released me To jump for open skies over open water I have reached the sea And in these veins Flow white blood cells and salt water My heart doesn’t like change I was made in the glacier’s fresh I can hear each beat And feel each pulse Repel the salt in my blood To keep the dilutions out And know only the Pains of Being Pure at Heart But inevitably As I wade warily My heart is the estuary Blue Batman has resolved me To dive for fissures and trenches in the deep ocean floor I have reached the bottom And in these veins Float debris and salt water And inevitably As I wade wearily My heart is the estuary
